Yumehiko Hoshijima

Associate

Overview

Yumehiko “Yume” Hoshijima represents governments to secure just outcomes for the public. A versatile litigator who works on every stage of litigation and across the firm’s climate, natural resources, and water dockets, he applies rigorous scientific and technical training to guide clients through issues of first impression and complex regulatory frameworks.

For example, Yume represents California in California Department of Toxic Substances Control v. NL Industries, Inc., No. 2:20-cv-11293 (C.D. Cal.), a major cost-recovery suit involving a former secondary lead smelting facility near downtown Los Angeles. He has represented the state across four bench trials (including as second chair), signed most of the state’s written submissions including summary judgment and trial briefs, examined experts and corporate representatives, and advised on overall litigation strategy.

Before joining the firm, Yume clerked for the Honorable Scott M. Matheson, Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and the Honorable John A. Kronstadt of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Yume graduated from Yale Law School, where he was an Articles & Essays Editor of the Yale Law Journal and an inaugural John Kerry Fellow. An immigrant who grew up in San Diego, he is fluent in Japanese, his first language.
